With over four decades of experience in both aviation and law, Lance Strumpf provides trusted, authoritative expert witness services in helicopter-related litigation, pre-litigation, and safety consulting. As a certified FAA Commercial Helicopter Pilot, Rotorcraft Flight Instructor, and Part 135 Designated Check Airman, Lance has trained international flight crews including the Japanese National Police, managed complex air operations and film production, and supported elite events like Burning Man in the Nevada desert, NASCAR and Indy Racing shuttles, microwave downlinks and live television broadcasts, The Quail Motorsports Gathering, the Baja 1000 off-road race, and most notably, organized and flew Britain’s Prince William and Kate to their celebrity polo match in Santa Barbara. Based in Los Angeles, Lance has personally flown many celebrities and high-net-worth individuals, film actors, musicians, race car drivers, and real estate developers, completing every flight with smooth precision. Lance is a licensed California attorney at law and brings his aviation experience and legal insight to provide honest and objective opinions in the courtroom, especially where aeronautical decision-making is in question, which is often the case.

Lance Strumpf Helicopter Qualifications

From 1985, Lance has accumulated over 10,000 hours of single and twin turbine flight time, including mastery of the Bell 206B Jetranger, the Bell 206L Longranger, the Eurocopter AS350 and AS355 Astar and Twinstar variants, and the Agusta 109 Power and Grand. Lance was the Chief Pilot and Director of Operations for Briles Wing & Helicopter, Inc. Briles, formed in 1957, was a true pioneer in the civilian helicopter industry, with operations that stretched from South America to Alaska. Lance attended many years of factory training at Eurocopter in Grand Prairie, Texas and with Agusta in Philadelphia and in Italy.

Lance started his helicopter career as a young attorney representing a highly respected aerial cameraman and Director of Photography who was seriously injured in an accident at the Grand Canyon during the filming of a television commercial. The case involved something called loss of tail rotor effectiveness or LTE, also called unanticipated right yaw, in the Bell 206B Jetranger. As a result of the litigation, Bell published critical wind azimuth charts in the Pilot Operating Handbook for the first time, warning civilian pilots about the dangers of low-speed turns at certain wind angles where the main rotor downwash can interfere with tail rotor lift capabilities. Eager to learn everything he could to understand exactly what caused the accident, Lance connected with Greg Briles, the youngest son of Paul R. Briles, founder of Briles Wing & Helicopter, Inc. Greg embraced Lance’s curiosity and paired him with Briles rotorcraft pilots and instructors who were veterans of the Vietnam War. Lance learned from the best in the business and earned his FAA ratings from private to commercial to flight instructor, eventually taking on the role of Chief Pilot and Director of Operations of the Part 135 operation.

Lance was also fortunate to meet Peter McKernan who embraced Lance’s skills and introduced him to the Screen Actors Guild where Lance and Peter partnered up to work on many, many feature films and episodic television programs, music videos and national commercials. Lance was nominated for his performance on the film Transformers, and won a London International award for his work with Lamborghini introducing the all wheel drive Aventador.

From 1995 to 2008, Lance soared through the skies above the Baja Mexico peninsula for American Honda, delivering strategic air support to their iconic Baja 1000 motorcycle race team. During this exhilarating journey, the team achieved a jaw-dropping eleven overall victories, but what truly mattered was the unwavering safety of every Honda rider; not one was injured or worse with the vigilant helicopter above. Lance dedicates this remarkable experience to the late, great Bruce Ogilvie and to the legendary Johnny Campbell, whose daring spirits and unwavering dedication to the Baja 1000 continue to inspire. Lance has performed numerous flights landing on super-yachts such as the Triton both in Mexico and the US. After a tragic hurricane in Cabo San Lucas, Lance flew the Agusta 109 Power into the danger zone and rescued several families taking them back to the mainland with flights over the Sea of Cortez to Culiacan.

Lance’s exceptional legal expertise was pivotal when he successfully liberated an FAA registered Bell 206B that had been unlawfully confiscated by the Mexican government and handed over to the State of Morelos. Working closely with the US Embassy, he orchestrated the successful repatriation of the helicopter to its rightful owner, personally piloting the recovered Jetranger from Cuernavaca, Mexico, to Van Nuys, CA. For his impressive achievement in fulfilling a crucial Embassy mission—the return of stolen property to the United States—Lance received accolades from James Jones, the US Ambassador to Mexico.
